*Basic Question for Professional Development: What would it look like on the number line?*

This is the fundamental question I use to help just about anyone understand just about anything math-wise. This simple question applies, I think, to just about any *it* in your K-8 math curriculum—word problems, operations, fractions, algorithms, whatever—especially from 3rd grade on. If you have a solid answer for this basic question, you’re probably pretty much okay for that curricular bit, at least.

If you don’t know what the math concept, operation, word problem, etc., you’re trying to teach would look like on the number line, or how the situation would translate onto the number line, that is generally where to start.
